Pesticides

Dursban

An organophosphate pesticide with a principle ingredient of chlorpyrifos. It affects the central nervous system in a manner similar to nerve gas. It can cause a toxic brain injury resulting in symptoms such as headaches, memory loss, changes in personality, loss of impulse control, anxiety, aggression, sleep disturbance and depression. It can also effect the peripheral nervous system causing numbness in the hands and legs. Dursban has been associated with injury to virtually every organ system. It can cause respiratory symptoms including toxic asthma. It can create immune dysfunction resulting in chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia. It can also create injury to the immune system. These injuries can be caused by either acute or chronic exposure. The mechanism of injury is a reduction of a liver enzyme called cholinesterase which results in an increase of a neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. The pesticide has been associated with chemical sensitivity. The principle test of an acute exposure is cholinesterase testing.

Solvents

Hexane

An aliphatic hydrocarbon and a solvent. It is found in glue, paint and other solvents. The metabolite 2, 5 hexandione, is more toxic than the parent compound. Hexane most commonly causes a peripheral neuropathy that results in numbness in the hands and legs. It can also effect the central nervous system and cause a toxic brain injury. Its symptoms are headaches, memory loss, changes in personality, loss of impulse control, anxiety, aggression, sleep disturbance and depression. Injury is usually associated with chronic exposure. Hexane can adversely effect the liver that can potentiate its effect. Hexane can also adversely effect the liver, respiratory system, endocrine system or other systems.

Petroleum Products – Gasoline, Fuel Oil, Propane

Gasoline and other petroleum contaminants should be remediated as soon as possible. Testing should be performed of the soil, air, or water to determine the extent of contamination and the best means of remediating it. These products may cause a toxic brain injury resulting in memory loss, headaches and personality change. They can cause chemical sensitivity, immune dysfunction, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Future cancer risk or birth defects are also possible. Injury to the endocrine system or thyroid can occur. Various types of antibody testing may disclose a prior exposure to petroleum products. Testing of the soil, air, or water may reveal the contaminants. Immediate medical treatment should be undertaken.

Heavy Metals

Lead

Can be absorbed into the body by mouth or inhalation. Once in the blood system, lead is primarily distributed among blood, soft tissue and mineralizing material such as bone or teeth. The most sensitive target of lead poisoning is the central nervous system or brain. It can cause a toxic brain injury. Its symptoms are loss of I.Q., loss of memory, headaches and changes in personality. It can cause other symptoms such as myalgia, fatigue, vomiting, weight loss and effect other systems. Children are more susceptible to the effects of lead poisoning.

Biological Contaminants

Mold and Mildew

Can accumulate as a result of water damage to the home or occur in the heating or air conditioning system. When this happens, the fungus and bacteria must be remediated to prevent any further difficulty. The most common injury is respiratory distress that may result in toxic asthma. The immune system may be compromised resulting in further injury or infections. Mold and mildew may effect other systems such as the brain and cause chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia. It has been associated with chemical sensitivity.

Miscellaneous Contaminants

Radiation

Most often associated with a nuclear power plant. Accidental exposure may occur as a result of exposure to its use in medicine, x-rays or industry. Natural occurring substances such as fertilizer may contain phosphate or phosphogypsum that may contain radioactive products. People living in the vicinity may be exposed by air or contamination of ground water or well water. Radiation can result in various cancers or birth defects. Other symptoms are toxic brain injury, chronic headaches, respiratory distress and weakened immune system. Environmental testing and remediation should be undertaken as soon as possible.
